Dr. Cedar, a dedicated local veterinarian, recently returned from leading a pre-veterinary study program in Chiang Mai, Thailand with a company called Loop Abroad. The program, designed for aspiring veterinarians, offers hands-on experience with exotic animals and domestic species, providing participants with unique insights into global veterinary practices. Dr. Cedar led a group of 11 students, teaching them everything from how to examine a dog or cat, to how an anaesthetic machine works, to fundamentals of surgery.
A highlight of the trip was time spent at Elephant Nature Park, a renowned sanctuary for rescued elephants. Students worked alongside park staff, learning about ethical animal tourism, elephant rehabilitation, and the challenges of caring for injured or retired elephants. “Getting to know my group, teaching them, and seeing their eagerness to join the profession was inspiring. I feel so lucky to get the chance to do this work, especially in such a magical setting. ENP is one of the most beautiful places in the world,” Dr. Cedar said.
The trip not only inspired students, but also supported local conservation initiatives, underscoring the importance of sustainable animal care. That support comes at a critical time, as Chiang Mai has suffered significant flooding recently, with a catastrophic flash flood at Elephant Nature Park in October requiring emergency evacuation of thousands of rescued animals. Dr. Cedar hopes to continue supporting such programs, helping students broaden their horizons while making a meaningful impact abroad. This immersive experience provided participants with invaluable knowledge and unforgettable memories, setting them on a path to becoming compassionate, globally-minded veterinarians.
